September is Suicide Prevention Month, and September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day, making this an important opportunity for our construction and trades community to have a conversation that can save lives.

The construction industry continues to experience one of the highest suicide rates of any major occupational group. According to the CDC, the suicide rate among men working in construction was 56.0 deaths per 100,000 workers in 2021, significantly higher than the rate for working men overall.

At this month's Safety, Health & Environment Council meeting, Ridge Wilson will lead an informative and important presentation focused on suicide prevention and its impact on the construction and trades industry.

Ridge will address the unique challenges facing people in our industry, how these issues can affect employees, coworkers, families and businesses, and—most importantly—how we can recognize when someone may be struggling and learn how to start the conversation.

This isn't just a mental health issue. It's a safety issue, a workplace issue and an industry issue.

Please join us for this important discussion and be part of creating a culture where looking out for one another is just as important as looking out for physical safety on the jobsite.

Suicide and mental health in the construction and trades industry
Why our industry is particularly vulnerable
Recognizing warning signs and risk factors
How to approach someone who may be struggling
Reducing the stigma around asking for help
Resources and ways employers and coworkers can provide support
Steps our industry can take to build a stronger culture of safety and support

Everyone in the construction and trades community is encouraged to attend.

Builders and Trade Partners are encouraged to be part of the committee to help provide real-world input on safety topics, share industry best practices, and play an active role in strengthening a culture where safety always comes first.
